Google Adsense, Is It Right For Me?

Undoubtedly, you’ve heard about Google’s AdSense and you are thinking about giving it a go. But is it really worth placing an AdSense banner on your site?

The answer is a definite yes. You could always have some other banner on your site, or even use some search of affiliate ad program and that would probably make you some money, given of course that your site enjoys a healthy amount of visitors. However with affiliate marketing, it is expected that the visitor from your website completes a sale before you are remunerated.

But that’s nowhere near what you get for using AdSense. There are people who earn in excess of 100.000 dollars per year by using AdSense. And it doesn’t just stop with making more money. Firstly, the ads are text only. That means they’re by far less obtrusive on your visitors then your average, flashy banner that’s designed to catch the eye of the visitor.

Purpose

Before the advent of LCD screens, most computer screens depended on cathode ray tubes (CRTs). When the same image is displayed on a CRT screen for long periods of time, the properties of the exposed areas of phosphor coating on the inside of the screen gradually and permanently change, eventually leading to a darkened shadow or "ghost" image on the screen. Televisions, oscilloscopes and other devices that use CRTs are all susceptible to phosphor burn-in , as are plasma displays to some extent.

Screensaver programs were designed to help avoid these effects by automatically changing the images on the screen during periods of user inactivity.

For CRTs used in public, such as ATMs and railway ticketing machines, the risk of burn-in is especially high because a stand-by display is shown whenever the machine is not in use. Older machines designed without burn-in problems taken into consideration often display evidence of screen damage, with images or text such as "Please insert your card" (in the case of ATMs) visible even when the display changes while the machine is in use. Blanking the screen is out of the question as the machine would appear to be out of service. In these applications, burn-in is prevented by shifting the position of the display contents every few seconds, or by having a number of different images that are changed regularly.

Modern CRTs are much less susceptible to burn-in than older models due to improvements in phosphor coatings, and because modern computer images are generally lower contrast than the stark green- or white-on-black text and graphics of earlier machines. LCD computer monitors, including the display panels used in laptop computers, are not susceptible to burn-in because the image is not directly produced by phosphors (although they can suffer from a less extreme and usually non-permanent form of image persistence). For these reasons, screensavers today are primarily decorative or for entertainment, and usually feature moving images or patterns and sometimes sound effects.

One increasingly popular application is for screensavers to activate a useful background task, such as a virus scan or a distributed computing application (such as the SETI@home project). This is convenient because these applications only use resources when the computer would be otherwise idle.

Creating a Website

There's a lot of information on this site and if you're a beginner, it can be overwhelming. I created this quick guide just to give you an idea of what's involved with creating a website.

I encourage you to read it through once without clicking on any of the links just so you can understand the big picture. Then after you've absorbed the info, go back and click the links for more info.

What You Need to Build a Website

1) Domain Name

The domain name creates the address of your site. So, mywebsite.com would be an example of a domain name.

Domain names are paid for yearly and you can register them.

Looking for a FREE site?

I never endorse free webhosts. They are too unstable, you never really own your site and you do not receive a true domain name. Instead your address will be something like http://freesite.yourdomain.com. In some cases, the domain may be even longer.

2) Web Host

A website cannot exist without a web host. This is the company that houses your files and provides the environment for you to create and save pages to the Internet.

Web hosts are usually paid for monthly (some are yearly).

Learn the importance of choosing the right. Very important page!

3) Web Building Software (Optional)

Some web hosts provide website building tools so you do not need any additional software. It's important you find out about this before you sign up with any host.

CoffeeCup & Dreamweaverare popular web editing software programs that people use to create and maintain their sites.

If you don't use any software, then you will need to learn how to code HTML from scratch. All you do is open a text editor (Notepad or BBEdit for example) and then write the HTML that will create your page. It's pretty easy to learn.

Then you save the file as filename.html and save it to the Internet through your web host.

If you're not interested in learning HTML, I'd strongly recommend downloading some of free HTML tempaltes and buying a software program like CoffeeCup to edit and continue building your site.

Nvu and Komposer are two free editors you can download. As you might expect, they do have some limitations (free is not always best) but they can get the job done.

4) Selling Products

Want to sell products and take orders from your site? The best way to do this is to sign up with paypal. They are a free merchant that will accept credit cards for you and they take a small percentage of each order. It's convenient and super easy to setup.

All you do is specify the price(s) for your goods and PayPal will give you the HTML code to paste into your site and it automatically creates the payment button and checkout interface for you.

PayPal handles all the credit card transactions for you. You can also link them to your checking account and have the funds transferred into your bank account electronically.

5) Other Website Features

Want a gaming site? Looking to create a message forum or chat room for your visitors to communicate? Maybe you want an online guestbook where people can leave you messages on your site.

This is where it gets a little tricky but don't let it discourage you. As the Internet matures, it's getting easier and easier to setup these kinds of things on a website.

Any kind of user interactive feature on a website requires some kind of script. A script is nothing but a file that contains a bunch of code that tells the browser how to behave.

Depending on what you want to create for your site, you'll need to go to your favorite search site (Google, for example) and search for the appropriate script (game script, message board script, etc.) Some are free, some are not-so-free.

Say you want a message board/forum, you can go to http://www.phpbb.com and get a free message board script. The trick is you have to install it yourself.

They do provide instructions and it really isn't that difficult but you'll need to get setup with your web host first.

Most web hosts will help you if you need some guidance and some even provide scripts to their customers for free. certainly does.

Important! Before you select a web host, make sure they support the kind of script and functionality you want to use.
